Ostapenko and Kichenok win in the round of 16 of the Indian Wells “WTA 1000” tournament

The duo of Latvia and Ukraine, which is seeded eighth in the competition, defeated the Japanese Šuko Aoyama and the Serbian Aleksandar Krunič with 6-4, 6-4.

In the first set, the tenth game turned out to be decisive, in which Ostapenko and Kichenok won, serving their opponents and using the first set point.

The Latvian/Ukrainian pair also started the second set with a serve, using the first of three break points in the fourth game, but in the next game the opponents fought back, using the second of three break points.

In the seventh game, Kruniča and Aoyama once again realized the second of three break points, taking the lead for the first time in the match – 4-3.

The Latvian and Ukrainian duo won the next three games, realizing the second break point in the eighth game, and the only match point in the tenth game.

The winners managed three uncatchable serves, the opponents did not win a single game in this way, and there were also fewer double faults between Ostapenko and Kichenok (4:5).

The winners scored more points with the first serve (80.6%:60.5%), while the opponents – with the second (43.5%:41.2%).

Both pairs used half a break point, but the winners had eight such opportunities, and the losers – four break points.

Throughout the match, Ostapenko won 64 out of 114 games with Kichenok.

Ostapenko has earned 215 world doubles ranking points for reaching the quarterfinals.

In the first round match, the Latvian/Ukrainian duo beat the Italian Sara Errani and the German Laura Siegemund 1-6, 6-2, 10:8.

In the quarterfinals, Ostapenko/Kichenok will meet the international duo Nicole Melijar-Martinez (USA)/Elena Perez (Australia), seeded with the fourth number, who defeated Magda Linetti from Poland and Bernard Peru in the round of 16 with 6-3, 3-6, 10:6 ( UNITED STATES).

In singles, Ostapenko lost the first match, losing in three sets to former world number one Angelica Kerber from Germany, who is ranked 607th in the WTA ranking, and ended the tournament with 10 world ranking points.

The tournament in Indian Wells will be held on hard courts until March 17.
