A breathtaking celestial event
On April 8, astronomy enthusiasts and the simply curious will have the opportunity to witness an extraordinary phenomenon: a total solar eclipse that will immerse part of North America in darkness for a few minutes. This rare and fascinating event will occur during the baseball season opener at Progressive Field in Cleveland, where the Cleveland Guardians will face the Chicago White Sox.
The moment of the eclipse
The stadium doors will open at 2 p.m., just as the eclipse will begin to be visible in northeast Ohio. Because the state is in the path of totality, the Moon will appear to completely cover the Sun, throwing communities into temporary darkness about an hour after the event begins. For downtown Cleveland, totality will begin at 3:13 pm and last approximately 4 minutes.
Precautions for spectators
During the eclipse, spectators are strongly recommended to wear specialized safety glasses if they intend to look directly at the Sun. The Solar Eclipse Working Group of the American Astronomical Society has created a list of companies and manufacturers that meet the requirement of international security ISO 12312-2.
A unique event in different cities
In addition to Cleveland, other major cities in the path of totality include San Antonio and Dallas in Texas, Indianapolis in Indiana, Buffalo in New York, and Montreal in Canada. The American Astronomical Society estimates that any given point on the planet sees temporary darkness from the Moon’s shadow only once every 400 years.
The duration of the event in Cleveland
The entire event in the Cleveland metropolitan area is expected to conclude at 4:29 pm, which is 41 minutes before the first launch scheduled for 5:10 pm. Single tickets for the season opener have prices ranging from 49 euros to well over 200 euros, for one of the 80 matches scheduled at the Progressive Field.
Collateral activities and expected traffic
The City of Cleveland expects significant traffic downtown on the day of the event and encourages fans to arrive at the stadium early. Less than a mile away from Progressive Field, hundreds of spectators are expected to attend an eclipse viewing party at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The baseball game and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame are just two of hundreds of events planned from Texas to Maine as the country celebrates an occasion that will not happen again until August 23, 2044. It is estimated that more 30 million Americans are living in the path of totality, withmany millions more expected to travel tothe 15 states where the event will be visible. In view of the incredible surge in prices towards the American cities involved, as well as New York, Los Angels and then continuing with internal flights, many will move from other continents.
