OM Revives: Gasset’s Marseille Climbs to 6th Place in Ligue 1

OM is fully reviving and returning to the race for Europe. Jean-Louis Gasset’s Marseillais won a big victory in Clermont on Saturday, during the 24th day (1-5). After Iliman Ndiaye’s opener (23rd) and Clermont’s equalizer at the start of the second half, the visitors scored a series of goals to offer their new coach a third success in a row, the second in L1. They climbed to 6th place in the ranking. The CF63 sinks into last position.

Aligned in 4-3-3 due to the injury absence of Samuel Gigot, the Marseillais did not, however, ask themselves any questions on the Gabriel-Montpied pitch. They immediately took their opponents by the throat. Concentrated in front of their surface, the Clermontois put up resistance despite a nice ball breakthrough at the foot of Leonardo Balerdi (11th). Right winger Ismaila Sarr was less technically adept by forcing a strike at the end of the race instead of serving Amine Harit behind (19th).

Ndiaye and Aubameyang in great form

Marseille’s clear domination was rewarded when Jonathan Clauss, launched into the zone by Pape Gueye, crossed to the ground and allowed Ndiaye to open the scoring after a call from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the near post (0-1, 23rd). The former Sheffield United player scored his third league goal of the season, the second in a row after that against Montpellier (4-1).

Trailing, the CF63 tried to shake itself off but Balerdi kept watch in his area in front of Shamar Nicholson (38th). Shortly before and shortly after the break, OM had the opportunity to make the break, Mory Diaw nevertheless diverted Sarr’s header from a corner (45th). The Auvergne goalkeeper was then replaced by his defense which countered the shots that were not clear enough from Ndiaye and Aubameyang (47th). Diaw also repelled a scissor from the Gabonese attacker (50th).

He restarted his team but the visitors reacted and regained the advantage through Aubameyang, who scored from close range. two times after a cross from Azzedine Ounahi, for the 50th achievement of his career in L1 (1-2, 59th).

Gasset strengthened his midfield and his men confirmed their superiority then exploded the opposing defense. Jonathan Clauss placed a cross shot under the bar for the break and a first goal after hectic weeks (1-3, 67th). Incoming Luis Henrique scored after an express counter following a Clermont corner, his first goal in the French championship after his arrival in September 2020 then his return last December (1-4, 79th).

Also off the bench, Faris Moumbagna shook the nets with a powerful low strike (1-5, 90th+3). OM finally won their second victory of the season away from home in the league after that at Lorient (2-4 in December).
