Olympic Bronze Medalist Claim Silver at Judo Grand Slam, Aims for Gold Next Time

The Olympic bronze medalist only had to admit defeat to world number one Matthias Casse from Belgium in the final; for the 28-year-old Upper Austrian it was the fourth defeat in the fourth duel.

“I had already suffered three defeats against Casse. This time I was emotionally equal. Now I’m very disappointed that it was only silver again. But there wasn’t much missing. I will analyze the mistakes and attack again next time,” said Borchashvili . But it was a “very good day”. “Tactically, physically and mentally I pushed myself to my absolute limit and fought at a high level. Only the icing on the cake was missing at the end: the gold.”

In the semifinals, Borchashvili beat Omar Rajabli from Azerbaijan and lost out to Sagi Muki from Israel for the pool victory. The tournament is one of the Upper Austrian’s favorites; the arena, which is usually full, holds 12,500 spectators. He also came second at the Grand Slam in 2023 and won World Cup bronze in 2022. It continues next week at the home Grand Prix in Linz. “In any case, I’m in shape – we’ll rock Linz.”
