Novak Djokovic

The always well-informed Serbian journalist Sasa Ozmo reported this on the X / Twitter platform on Thursday afternoon.

Djokovic last played in Miami in 2019, his last win was in 2016. In recent years, Djokovic was not allowed to enter the USA due to his failure to be vaccinated against Corona.

The fact that he is now canceling comes as a bit of a surprise – he was registered and the tournament itself also advertised the number 1 in the world rankings.

It is not known why Djokovic is canceling – whether it is due to an injury or his current form crisis.

Djokovic still without a tournament win in 2024

Djokovic had a weak start to the year by his standards. He had already suffered a defeat at the United Cup, and at the Australian Open he lost in the semi-finals after a weak performance against the eventual winner Jannik Sinner.

Djokovic also skipped the tournament in Dubai, and now in Indian Wells he lost sensationally against the Italian lucky loser Luca Nardi. At the start he had to go through three sets against Aleksandar Vukic.

“Not used to”

“My level was really, really bad,” Djokovic admitted after his defeat. And uncertainty was also shown regarding Miami – “It’s currently planned, let’s see,” he said. “I probably need a day or two to know what happens next.”

In general, Djokovic was surprised at his poor start to the year. “No title this year, that’s something I’m not very used to. For most of my career I started with a Grand Slam tournament win, with a win in Dubai or elsewhere.

Every trophy that will hopefully follow is something great, Djokovic then explained. “Because it would break the negative cycle that I’ve had in the last three or four tournaments. I wasn’t anywhere near my best.”
