Novak Djokovic Ends Coaching Relationship with Goran Ivanisevic: A Look Back at Their Successful Partnership

The number one in tennis, Novak Djokovic announced the end of his relationship with his coach, former Croatian tennis player Goran Ivanisevic in a message on social networks, ending a partnership between the two that has existed since 2018, a period in which the Serbian star has won 12 of his 24 Grand Slam titles.

“Goran and I decided to stop working together a few days ago”Djokovic said in a message on Instagram. “Our chemistry on the court has had ups and downs, but our friendship has always been rock solid,” he said.

Djokovic decided to add Ivanisevic, the 2001 Wimbledon champion, to his coaching team in 2018. Then the Serbian was still trained by the Slovenian Marian Vajda, his historical coach and with whom he was until the beginning of 2022.

“I clearly remember the moment when I invited Goran to be part of my team,” Djokovic said.

“It was in 2018, Marian (Vajda) and I were looking to innovate and bring a little magic on the serve to our duo”, he explained. “Not only did we achieve a contribution for the serve, but also a lot of laughter, enjoyment, number one at the end of the year, records broken and another twelve Grand Slams, in addition to several finals, for the accountant,” he added.

However, Djokovic is not living up to his expectations so far in 2024, starting with his loss in the Australian Open semifinals against the future champion, the Italian Jannik Sinner.

The Belgrade native also fell in the third round of Indian Wells against fellow Italian Luca Nardi and dropped out of Miami.

With Ivanisevic, Djokovic broke the records for the number of Grand Slam titles in men’s tennis (24), Masters 1000 titles (40) and season-ending Masters (7).

They also experienced another more difficult moment, when Djokovic was expelled from Australia in January 2022 for not being vaccinated against Covid-19.

“I am proud to say, although I don’t know if he will be, that in addition to having won tournaments together we have also had a parallel battle in Parchisi (the board game version of Parcheesi). And that tournament does not stop between us,” Indian.
