The Niners Chemnitz have already made history by reaching the semi-finals of the Europe Cup. Now the final beckons. The Saxons have to play against a Spanish record team. Lessons from the recent defeat in the BBL should help.
The frustration at the Niners Chemnitz after the narrow BBL defeat on Sunday against Alba Berlin was great. The Saxons have to get going again on Wednesday (March 27th, 2024, from 8 p.m. on the ticker and can be heard in full live) – in the semi-finals of the Europe Cup, coach Rodrigo Pastore’s team will be challenged by the Spanish club Bilbao Basket.
Yebo: “We have to minimize errors”
“We have to minimize our mistakes,” complained Niners center Kevin Yebo after the 79:84 win against the Berliners. Against Alba, the Chemnitz team only made 54 percent of their two-point attempts, 23 percent from the three-point line, 70 percent of their free throws and 40 percent of their field goal attempts. In almost all statistics, the guest from Berlin had better values - and ultimately won.
Things should now go better on Wednesday and at eleventh in the table in the Spanish league ACB. Yebo repeats what it’s about. “Concentration is a factor. But we have to minimize our mistakes. Then we can compete with the big teams.”
Bilbao: Biggest comeback in EC history
Club Deportivo Basket Bilbao Berri, which was only founded in 2000 and has been playing in the strong Spanish first division since 2004, is not one of the absolute top teams internationally. But the Bundesliga runner-up from Chemnitz should be warned. Like the Niners, Bilbao marched through the preliminary round without defeat and confidently through the second round.
Something historic happened in the quarter-finals: the Spaniards overturned a 19-point deficit from the first leg against the Polish club Legia Warsaw. After the 64:83 defeat in Warsaw, Bilbao won the second leg 81:53, a lead of 28 points. This was the biggest comeback in the history of the Europe Cup.
Chemnitz beckons the final
Chemnitz already had to deal with a team from Spain in the quarterfinals. The Niners celebrated two wins against the twelfth-placed Liga ACB from Zaragoza. If they manage to win again on Wednesday in Bilbao, Chemnitz would be within reach of a historic first final in the European Cup. In the second semi-final, the Turkish club Bahcesehir College and the Italian team Itelyum Varese face each other.
