The club and fans have been calling for their own venue for the Niners Chemnitz basketball club for a long time. Now Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer has brought new impetus to the discussion. Kretschmer told the streaming service Dyn on Sunday that there were already concrete plans for a new hall in the center of Chemnitz. Kretschmer wants to support these plans.
What are the plans now being discussed?
A sports and culture campus in the center of Chemnitz is under discussion. For this purpose, a working group of committed Chemnitz residents is creating a corresponding usage concept. Their press spokesman Arndt Hecker told MDR SACHSEN that they were looking for a location that would not be used exclusively for sporting events. Culture and art must also play an important role on the new campus. It is still unclear who will build the hall and how it will be financed.
Why do the Niners need their own hall?
There are two reasons. The Chemnitz Arena has 5,200 seats. The Niners could sell significantly more tickets at home games. This means that the club also loses out on income that it would have had in a larger hall. But even more important is that the Chemnitz Arena has to be rented. However, this is only possible if the Chemnitz Trade Fair has not planned its own events in the hall and the hall is free. There have been several problems in the past.

After the Richard Hartmann Hall in Chemnitz, which had been used since 2002, became too small, the Niners used the Chemnitz Arena at the Chemnitz Trade Fair from the 2019/2020 season.
