Nikoloz Sherazadishvili Wins Gold with Masterful Ippon at Tbilisi Grand Slam

A masterful ippon against Canadian Shady Elnahas crowned Nikoloz Sherazadishvili in the Grand Slam in Tbilisi (Georgia). The 28-year-old Spanish judoka, born precisely in the Georgian country, wins his first important gold since he decided to gain weight in 2022 from -90 kilos to -100, although he had already been showing that his decision was correct with the four consecutive podiums that he carry. The double world champion, who in the previous weight class had won four golds, already knows what it means to win in the new category, something that is exciting for the Paris Olympic Games next summer.

Shera, world number 13 and fourth seed, consecutively defeated the Russian Igor Dolganov, the German George Unidoslauri, the Uzbek Ernazar Sarsenbaev and the Georgian Mikheil Japaridze (who eliminated the number 1 seed, the Canadian Kyle Reyes, by surprise) before beat Elnahas, world number 7 and second favorite, in the final match. This is Niko’s fifth Grand Slam gold medal, his first since Paris 2020; and the third of the season after the silver achieved in Paris and Portugal, in addition to the bronze in the European Championship.
