The Italian specialist admitted that it is difficult to achieve a competitive national team if there are no competitive clubs. “It goes without saying that the work of the national team is very dependent on the work of the clubs. Therefore, one of my goals and also that of the federation is to build cooperation directly with the clubs,” said the coach.
“The common goal of all of us is to work on improving Latvian football, performance in the championship. And I will pay a lot of attention to that – we have already had a meeting with club coaches and clubs to share this experience,” revealed Nikolato.
Nicolato also pointed out that one of the main tasks of the coach of the national team is not to make a mistake in the selection of players. “That’s why we will follow the Latvian championship directly, in person, because every player in the championship must be aware that if he has earned it, he can become part of the national team,” emphasized the coach.
Nicolato was confirmed as the head coach of the national team at the beginning of February, signing a contract for two years.
Nicolato, now 57, spent the previous seven years working with Italy’s youth teams. Under his leadership, Italy once won the second place in the European U-19 Championship, losing to Portugal 3-4 in extra time in the final. In 2019, he won fourth place with the Italian national team in the FIFA U-20 World Cup. Last summer, the Italian U-21 national team led by him did not make it to the playoffs at the European Championship, and with that the specialist ended his seven-year long work with the Italian youth.
Under the leadership of Nikolato, the Latvian national team will compete against another UEFA Nations C League team Cyprus during the first training camp on March 21 in Larnaca, Cyprus, and on March 26 they will play against the Liechtenstein national team.
