National Hockey League (NHL) named the three brightest stars of the past week. Edmonton “Oilers” center forward Connor McDavid was recognized as the third best, Toronto “Maple Leafs” center forward Auston Matthews was awarded the second star, and Washington “Capitals” forward Alexander Ovechkin received the award of the brightest star of the week.
McDavid was the league’s top scorer the previous week – the Canadian scored one goal and had ten assists in four games. The Oilers star is on the verge of becoming the first hockey player since Wayne Gretzky to record at least 100 assists in a season in 33 years. He has 91 assists and 26 goals in 67 matches this season.
Matthews, on the other hand, scored ten points in four games – he had three goals and seven assists. This season, Matthews is the top scorer in the league, with the American standing out with 58 goals, eight more than the closest followers in this indicator. He is also among the leaders in other indicators – third in interceptions (73), third in most goals (15), fourth in shots on goal (296), eighth in points scored (92), eighth in winning goals (8), ninth in shots made (19, 6%) and tenth in +/- indicator (+28).
Ovechkin scored the most goals in the NHL last week, scoring seven accurate shots and one assist in four matches. Since January 27, Ovechkin has scored 18 goals in 24 matches, while the “Capitals” forward has 26 goals and 32 assists in 67 matches this season.
