New England jerseys: the cross of discord

Did you like the debate on the Tintin Red Devils jersey? You will love its (or almost) English equivalent! Oh shocking, the supplier of the Three Lions dared to commit a crime of lèse-majesté on the collar of the new jersey of the English national team.

If for many observers, the new England jerseys are a real success, for certain fans and politicians, there is a detail of 2 cm² which does not go through: at the back of the collar, the cross of Saint George has been recolored in shades of blue, red and mauve. Yes, the American brand which equips the English national teams has dared to touch the famous red cross, symbol of the patron saint of England for centuries, present in particular on the English flag!

“A real joke”thus got carried away Nigel Farage, one of the great architects of Brexit, and a petition “Save St George’s Cross in English football” appeared online, collecting nearly 20,000 to date signatures in favor of removing the jersey. The press also took up the subject, relaying comments made on social networks where the word “woke” was associated with this new jersey. Questioned by the BBC, the former international goalkeeper Peter Shilton declared himself rather unfavorable to these color changes on the cross: “I am traditional. Red, white and blue are the colors of our flag.”
