The new contract will provide at least 8 million in salary savings

Los New York Jets and the linebacker C.J. Mosley signed a two-year, $17.25 million contract that creates cap space for the team and provides additional security for the player, sources told Field Yates of ESPN Thursday.

C.J. Mosleythe team’s defensive captain in 2023, was due to earn a non-guaranteed base salary of $17 million in 2023. The two sides extended the contract by one year and included $13.25 million in guarantees, including nine million fully guaranteed this season.

Mosley, 31, has been a stalwart for the past three seasons. He has played in 50 of 51 games and has led the team in tackles each season, making the Pro Bowl in 2022 and second-team All-Pro in 2023.

He was one of the biggest free agent acquisitions in the organization’s history, signing a five-year, $85 million contract in 2019 after five seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. At the time, it was a record contract for a linebacker. He missed 14 games in 2019 due to a groin strain and accepted a COVID opt-out in 2020, which ended his contract.

Los Jets, who entered free agency with roughly $26 million in cap space, have yet to make a big splash. They signed the quarterback Tyrod Taylor, to defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw, to the guard John Simpsonto defensive tackle Photo Lake and to the corner Isaiah Oliver with one- and two-year deals averaging less than $8 million per year. His big loss was the pass rusher. Bryce Huffwho signed a three-year, $51 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.
