New Celta Coach Claudio Giráldez Leads Team to Victory Over Sevilla

Claudio Giráldez debuts at Celta with one of those victories that elevate coaches from the beginning. Brave and responsive, the Vigo team even overcame a goal against to turn it around deservedly, and thus move away from the relegation spots while putting Sevilla back in the mess. Poorly directed, in the approach and in the changes, Quique Flores’ team took the lead and was able to score some very clear chances on the counterattack during the second half, but they never gave the sensation of going for the truth, going for the game.

A very offensive and cruyff-like Celta, with the 3-4-3 as their flag, had already taken control of the ball enough to spoil it in the 19th minute, when in a bad start En-Nesyri stole Núñez’s wallet and he defined only against Guaita (1-0′). The score against them did not intimidate the Galicians or their coach, quite the opposite. An injury to Manquillo caused Giráldez to go even more on the attack and bring in a winger, Carles Pérez, in the wing-back position. Some of Celta’s best chances were created on the Catalan’s left wing before and after the break: Larsen, up to three times against Nyland, Aspas… And Carles himself, culminating with a shot (it seemed that the goalkeeper could have done more) the tie when the final stretch of the match was approaching (1-1, 71′).

Sevilla had not had a midfield until then, nor did Quique know how to recover it. The most notorious thing the Madrid coach did in the band was fight with En-Nesyri. Before the tie there were chances to make it 2-0. Isaac couldn’t beat Guaita up to three times. The man from Lebrija has lost the star of his first games and seems blind to the rival goal; Ocampos and Lukebakio also tested the Valencian goalkeeper.

But it was Larsen who was right again for Celta. Bamba crossed from the left and the Norwegian striker got ahead of a sleeping Sevilla defense (why three centre-backs) with an acrobatic, almost spur-like shot (1-2, 77′). Stunned by their own incompetence, Sevilla barely had the ability to react; A penalty called by Hernández Maeso on Lukebakio that was later rectified by the VAR barely sparked his hope. Nervión must continue rowing in search of salvation. Vigo breathes at the beginning of the Giráldez era.
