“Break Point” did not have the desired success

After just two seasons it’s over: streaming provider Netflix has stopped production of the tennis series “Break Point”, according to a report in the “Times”. The reason for this is the lack of access to the absolute top players, which had a negative impact on viewership.

In terms of views, “Break Point” clearly lags behind its counterparts from Formula 1 (“Drive to Survive”) and Golf (“Full Swing”). The fact that tennis would be fundamentally interesting for the streaming giant was recently shown at the “Netflix Slam” in Las Vegas.

The end of the series had already been announced in November 2023. In particular, the lack of cooperation between the two male superstars Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal was Netflix’s downfall. The bottom line is that tennis remains a missed opportunity to attract a new audience.

“Break Point” will be remembered primarily for the so-called “Netflix curse” at the Australian Open 2023. All ten protagonists of the first season dropped out early in Melbourne or were unable to compete at all due to injury.
