NBA and scoring: The league reacted in January

The first month of fewer forced shooting fouls has the NBA family singing its praises. The same media personalities who previously criticized the league are now turning entire segments into the new era in the NBA.

Star players who previously consciously used their talents to get to the line probably need a little time to get used to the change. The offensive numbers and the reaction of the fans show that favoring the defense in one place or another is not wrong, even if it is questionable that the league implemented this during the season and not just in the summer.

Ultimately, it’s like this: As already mentioned, offensive players are more talented than ever and, thanks to the influence of analytics, more efficient than ever before. The clear advantage given to offensive players became somewhat redundant, and the NBA also seems to have understood this, even if the league repeatedly denied that there was an instruction to reduce scoring.

Even league vice-president Joe Dumars and referee boss Monty McCutchen were sent to ESPN to clarify this once again. And it didn’t come as a surprise to the teams either. Because: If you look at the official NBA website, you can find several videos on the so-called “Points of Emphasis,” which explain what referees pay particular attention to. This was posted at the end of January. One of these points? The so-called “Non Basketball Moves” with which offensive players were able to get a lot of fouls.
