NBA Draft 2023: Assessing French Prospect Alexandre Sarr’s Potential

By Pierre-Andréa Fraile | Sports journalist

His NBL season now over, Alexandre Sarr is the subject of numerous assessments in the United States in view of the upcoming Draft. The media HoopsHype notably listed the opinions of several NBA executives, one of whom sees (very) big for the young French interior.

As the regular season comes to a close in the NBA, most franchises still have a lot to play for from a sporting standpoint. Others, on the other hand, have already given up on participating in the playoffs and can therefore direct their attention towards next year. Their front offices must in particular keep an eye on the prospects who will arrive in the league on June 26 and 27.

Among the young talents ready to join the league are several French hopefuls, including a certain Alexandre Sarr. Expatriated in Australia and more precisely in Perth, the 18-year-old and 2m16 interior player finished his season a few days ago and still stunned observers for his last match there. Enough to justify the good places that he has monopolized in the mock drafts for several months.

Alex Sarr promised a bright future in the NBA

Impressive defensively in the NBL ranks, Sarr is reaping the rewards of his performance in expert projections. Most of them make him a potential future first pick, just like his compatriot Zaccharie Risacher. Michael Scotto HoopsHype also awarded it 1st place in its ranking and was based on the laudatory words of an anonymous NBA executive:

After 5 months in the league, Wemby cashes in on his physique: “For 80% of people, it’s…

I think he has everything in his game. He needs to land in a team that can be patient with him. He can be a very good player on both ends of the floor that you can build around in two years. I believe in his abilities as a shooter and blocker.

This is all the harm that can be wished for the French U19 international, who nevertheless remains surrounded by some doubts across the Atlantic.

American fans aren’t the only ones wondering about his potential. Another executive was less enthusiastic than his counterpart and listed the questions he might be missing:

I think the main concern with him is that he might not be a consistent shooter.

Afterwards, until now, he has scored shots with relatively good percentages. He’s big and athletic enough for the NBA. Is he going to be a spot-up shooter? Will it run at 32 or 37%? This is what will make the difference for him. And then there is also the physical aspect. Will he be physically strong enough to play position 5 and face the NBA big men?

Unlike Victor Wembanyama who was unanimous before his arrival in the NBA, Alexandre Sarr further divides the league’s scouts with his profile. However, this does not prevent him from being announced as a potential franchise player.
