The lawnmowers are out on the Borussia Dortmund training ground this afternoon during the international break, and it smells like spring. After a session with his team, Edin Terzic comes from the professional area and takes his time. The conversation lasts two and a half hours and provides many insights into the 41-year-old’s working methods and ideas.

One topic of the big interview is the great pressure that Terzic also experiences as coach of a club like BVB – which is also his first job as head coach. “I’m now 41 years old. I got my first coaching license when I was 21. So for half of my life so far, I’ve already thought like a coach in certain situations. I was also able to gain valuable experience as an assistant coach for almost ten years “I was an assistant in coaching offices when things were going well, but also when things were going badly,” he looks back and explains: “There isn’t a headline that I hadn’t read before I became coach of Borussia Dortmund.”

“Now my name is in the headline”

But the difference now is: “Now my name is in the headline.” He “consciously decided” that this was the case – by not just saying yes once. And yet he asks: “Whether the conditions are always right when it comes to criticism? I don’t know. But it’s part of my job, and anyway there is no pressure from outside that can be as great as the pressure I put on myself . Because I want to get better every day and find better solutions. As long as the joy of the journey to success is greater than the pressure I feel, I’m happy to do it. And I can assure you: I’m really up for it.”

There was also a phase recently in which he was in danger of losing the fun. “I was part of BVB for a long time before I worked as an assistant coach in Turkey and England. I’ve been back at BVB for six years now. I know Borussia Dortmund. I know the expectations. And I know BVB’s path : Year after year, we rebuild rather than build up because important players leave us. We still try to compete for titles every year. That’s our path. I’ve also made this path my path to success. And I like it.” He “consciously decided to do it, even if it is sometimes not easy, but often challenging – and often really exhausting,” he adds with a laugh.

“This is now part of our journey”

This is especially true for days like May 27, 2023, when BVB lost the championship they were within reach with a draw against Mainz 05. “I said straight after last season that I would have loved to have missed out on this experience. But this is now part of our journey to one day achieve our goal. Just like the ups and downs we have had over the course of this season “We all want to be successful in sport every year. But the past has shown that it is extremely difficult and there is no guarantee.”

But he doesn’t have to remind anyone of that and he doesn’t have to be reminded of it himself. “I get up every morning to invest everything I can for maximum success and to fight for it. That’s what Borussia Dortmund has always been known for in its 114-year history. Has BVB become champions every year or made it to the quarter-finals of the Champions League? No ! Was that why everything was bad? No!” he says: “I have no problem if my path to success takes a little longer, as long as I have the feeling that the direction is right.”
