Turn 30 into 19…
For last year’s Basketball World Cup in Asia, each of the participating teams received 28 accreditations for players, coaches and support staff. Plus two for the president and the general secretary of the respective association.

In Paris there are dramatically fewer – the IOC issues a total of 19 accreditations to the twelve teams taking part in the Olympic Games.
The twelve players each receive one of the 19 access authorizations to the games and the Olympic Village. In addition, national coach Gordon Herbert (65) and at least two of his assistants. Physios, doctors and athletic trainers also want to be considered.
Consequence: NBA professionals largely have to forego their private physios. Daniel Theis (31) had Simon Iden with him at the World Cup in Japan and the Philippines to look after him.
The Wagner brothers Franz (22) and Moritz (26) were given therapist Lindsey Elizondo by their NBA team Orlando Magic.
The German Basketball Association is now trying to accommodate the private physios as close as possible to the team.

This is not a problem in Lille, where the preliminary round takes place. There the teams are accommodated in a hotel complex that has been converted into a high-security wing. The association has rented rooms in the immediate vicinity (300 to 400 meters away). Additional rooms are a ten-minute drive away.
In Paris itself, where the final tournament is taking place, accommodating the unaccredited supervisors during the games is a major logistical effort.

After all, private physios and other supervisors are allowed to be present during training with a so-called “P accreditation”, of which the IOC distributes ten per team. If you want to be at the games, you have to buy tickets yourself.
The players aren’t much help. You can order tickets for your own games via your own app – but only a maximum of two per game.
