“I don’t think Sané can be used on the bench”

Germany’s victory against France sparked European Championship euphoria in the country. The majority of the starting eleven for the tournament should already be in place, says Felix Kroos. There could be a hardship case with Leroy Sané. Kroos is harsh on the Bayern star

He will be at the European Championship tournament in the summer – but also as a regular player for the German national team? Not even Leroy Sané himself seems to know that. A discussion about this with national coach Julian Nagelsmann is still pending.

The currently suspended national player Leroy Sané does not yet know exactly what role national coach Julian Nagelsmann has planned for him during the European Football Championship. “We haven’t talked about it that much yet. But we will, he had also announced that,” said the FC Bayern offensive player on Tuesday to Sky broadcaster: “We know each other well and get along very well. We find a very good role there.”

Nagelsmann had previously announced that he wanted to bet on Sané during the tournament. His three-game ban was “already a burden,” said the national coach: “Nevertheless, he has a quality that we don’t want to do without, we can’t do without.” He also emphasized: “But for him it’s also about to integrate, which is why we have these role discussions where each player can also think about whether they can cope with the role.”

In the successful test last Saturday in France (2-0), the youngsters Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala impressed in the attacking midfield, while captain Ilkay Gündogan played in the tenth position. Sané was shown a red card during the international match in Austria (0-2) after being out of control and was banned for three games by the world football association Fifa. He is still missing from the DFB team this Tuesday evening in Frankfurt/Main against the Netherlands and in the test against Ukraine on June 3rd in Nuremberg, just eleven days before the European Championship opening game against Scotland in Munich.

Kroos does not share Sané’s negative assessment

On Tuesday, Sané visited the DFB selection in the team’s quarters, and in the evening he attended the game against Holland in the Frankfurt European Championship stadium. “I’m happy to be here now, to see the boys and the coaches, that’s why I came,” said the 28-year-old.

The appointment of Nagelsmann as the new national coach “has created a good atmosphere,” said Sané, who is hoping for great euphoria before the start of the European Championship: “If you play well and then win, then of course that helps to attract the fans and to show: ‘Hey, we’re ready’. That’s why it’s good for our self-confidence. In general, we also do this for the fans.”

Meanwhile, national team returnee Toni Kroos has made it known that he does not understand his brother Felix’s negative assessment of Leroy Sané. Former professional Felix Kroos (33) spoke about the FC Bayern striker on Sunday in the “BILD Sport” program on WELT on TV one day after the national team’s convincing 2-0 win against World Cup runners-up France about the FC Bayern striker with a view to the European Championships in the summer said: “For me that’s a case: either starting eleven or not in the squad. I don’t think you can use him on the bench.”

Toni Kroos (34) does not share this view. “For once, I don’t agree with you,” he replied to his brother in the latest edition of their joint podcast “Just luppen”. He knows Sané, “also from the human side. And in any case – the coach decides what the role is anyway – there won’t be any problems.”

Sané talks about his future at FC Bayern

Toni Kroos emphasized that he believes that the national team “cannot do without a player with the qualities of Leroy in Germany.” “I am a thousand percent convinced of that and believe that he will be extremely important in this tournament.”

Sané himself was also asked about his own future in an RTL interview before the Holland game. When he was asked whether he would stay with the German record champions, he initially laughed. The RTL presenter replies: “Just say ‘yes’”. Sané doesn’t do that, but his answer is still meaningful.

“I feel very, very comfortable with my family. I also have goals with the club. We are still in the Champions League this year and want to win the title. Next year we have a final at home. Like the home European Championships, this is something big. I want to experience that and also give something back to the fans,” he said. The moderator then says: “That sounds like a ‘yes’”. Sané then nods.

Background: The winger’s contract only runs until next summer. For Bayern, a sale this summer would be the last chance to collect a transfer fee for Sané. However, his recent statements mean nothing regarding an extension. Because the crucial conversations are just coming. The gesture should be seen as more than politeness.
