Germany can hope for a new football summer fairy tale. 80 days before the opening game at the home European Championship, the DFB team, newly formed by national coach Julian Nagelsmann, won the second big test against Oranje 2-1 (1-1) after the 2-0 win in France.

After the two friendly wins against France and the Netherlands, Julian Nagelsmann only leaves the door to the European Championship squad open a little. “There is no question: If everyone stays healthy and continues to perform, we will definitely not trade ten players in the summer. Actually not five, maybe one or two – plus injuries,” said the national coach after the 2-1 win against the Netherlands on Tuesday evening in Frankfurt.
For long-time national players such as Bayern professionals Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry or Dortmund’s Mats Hummels, Niklas Süle and Julian Brandt, the chances of winning the European Championship have decreased significantly. “The message to these players is that we have now done well and they have to give it their all to get on the bandwagon. In the end, they have to be better than anyone who is there now, in whatever role. That’s clear,” said Nagelsmann.

Of course, a lot could still happen in the next two months until preparations for the European Championship start. “Unfortunately, sometimes players still get injured. And one or the other will no longer have the momentum because things are no longer working,” said Nagelsmann.
Sané gets his European Championship place
However, Bayern professional Leroy Sané, who was suspended against France and the Netherlands, should get one of the 23 squad places. “He is exceptionally good. He knows what it means to play a home European Championship. He has to integrate himself into this functioning group. I am convinced that Leroy puts his qualities 100 percent at the service of the team. And we definitely won’t miss out on that if he’s healthy,” said the national coach.

Sané visited the national team in Frankfurt on Tuesday and was also at the game in the evening. Nagelsmann announced that he would soon meet with the 28-year-old in Munich for dinner and a role discussion for the European Championships. Sané has to sit out another test match; he will only be able to play for the DFB team again on June 7th against Greece, exactly one week before the opening game against Scotland.

Nagelsmann is allowed to nominate 20 field players and three goalkeepers for the European Championship finals. He invited a total of 26 players to start the tournament year. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and newcomer Jan-Niklas Beste had to leave after training injuries. Bayern youngster Aleksandar Pavlovic, who was also called up for the first time, had to cancel the entire course due to tonsillitis.
