Michael Edwards Returns to Liverpool FC: A Strategic Realignment for the Club

Michael Edwards is returning to Liverpool FC next season. The club has officially confirmed this.

The 44-year-old worked at Liverpool between 2011 and 2022. After a two-year absence, the Englishman will replace owner Mike Gordon as head of football at the Fenway Sports Group (FSG) and will henceforth manage the sporting fortunes of the “Reds”.

Edwards needs to find a new athletic director and coach

Edwards has played a crucial role at Anfield in the past and was promoted from chief analyst to sporting director in 2016. From the 2024/25 season he will now operate at an even higher level. His return not only means a personnel change, but also a strategic realignment for the club.

One of his first tasks will be to find an adequate successor for the recently departed sporting director Jörg Schmadtke, who left Liverpool on February 1, 2024.

Another crucial step will be the joint search for a new coach to follow in Jürgen Klopp’s footsteps.

The collaboration between Edwards and Klopp in the past has been fruitful and led Liverpool to great success. Through a well-thought-out transfer policy, Edwards laid the foundation for the second Champions League victory in the club’s history in 2019 and for the first championship after 30 years in 2020.
