Mexico postpones ban on glyphosate due to lack of alternatives to replace it – El Sol de México

The Mexican government reported that it postponed the elimination of the use of glyphosate, scheduled for March 31, 2024, due to the lack of a substitute to replace the herbicide in Mexican agriculture.

“Since the conditions to replace the use of glyphosate have not been specified… the interest of safeguarding the country’s agri-food security must prevail,” the Ministry of Economy (SE), Environment and Resources indicated in a joint statement. Natural Resources (Semarnat), Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) and the Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris).

According to the decree, published on February 13, 2023, the elimination of glyphosate was conditioned by maintaining agricultural production and having viable alternatives. The herbicide allows farmers to increase food production.

“The actions provided for in the Decree have not yet concluded, so the Federal Executive, through the agencies we signed, determined to continue searching for an alternative,” he added.

On Monday, the Mexican Union of Agrochemical Manufacturers and Formulators (Umfaac) warned that 40 percent of the country’s cereal and other crop production will be at risk of being lost if the federal government’s ban is applied.

The industrialists anticipated that the determination has been a mistake, since Mexico is the only country of all the large agricultural industries in the world that is about to approve the ban.

Agriculture indicated that it will evaluate the biological effectiveness of alternative inputs to glyphosate through the National Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality Service (Senasica).

“The Government of Mexico maintains the purpose of the Decree to protect the right to health, to nutritious food, to a healthy environment for the development and well-being of people, as well as to guarantee the food sovereignty of the people of Mexico,” the statement added.
