7, 11, 22, 29, 38 and Megaball 4. With that series of numbers on a lottery ticket, someone in the American state of New Jersey became a multi-millionaire. The $1.13 billion Mega Millions lottery jackpot has fallen.
The Mega Millions jackpot hasn’t hit since December 8 last year, meaning 30 consecutive drawings without a big winner. The chance of winning the big prize is therefore extremely small: approximately 1 in 302 million.
The winner doesn’t have to be from New Jersey. What is certain is that the lot was sold there. The jackpot is number 5 in the list of the highest amounts of money paid out in the Mega Millions lottery. And in the list of all lotteries in America, this jackpot is in 8th place.
The highest amount paid out is $2.04 billion. That prize fell on November 7, 2022 in the so-called Powerball lottery on a ticket from California. The lottery announced the name of the winner, but did not share any further information about him at his request. The Mega Millions winner can remain anonymous thanks to a new law in New Jersey.
Back to 20 million
The winner can choose to collect the amount of money in one go; After taxes, that amounts to $537.5 million. Another option is to spread the payout over 30 years, over which the winner only has to pay income tax each year.

Now that the Mega Millions jackpot has been won, the amount for the next drawing is back to the standard amount of $20 million.
