Meet Johnny Buss: The Lakers’ Minority Owner Who is Running for President in 2024

LeBron James has always been linked to politics. The player has been an example off the court and his foundations and organizations have had an enormous impact on the community, so much so that on several occasions large figures in the public sector have used James’ image. He was seen with Barack Obama in his election campaign and even in 2020 he had to go out to deny a rumor that he wanted to be a candidate for the presidency of the United States in the future.. But in recent days we have learned that James may not be the Los Angeles Lakers representative closest to the White House: Minority owner Johnny Buss will be an independent candidate for the 2024 election.

The eldest son of Jerry Buss, owner of the Lakers from 1979 until his death in 2013, he controls a part of the franchise of which he has been vice president of strategic development for years. Additionally, he has held positions as president of the defunct Los Angeles Lazers indoor soccer team and president of the WNBA Los Angeles Sparks franchise while the Buss family was in control. Now he is a candidate to have control of the United States.

The official documents have been signed with the Federal Electoral Committee and his campaign is in action. On its official website, which is temporarily down, buss2024.com, it describes its vision as “an America that leads with compassion, innovation and above all integrity. An America in which racial equality is not just an ideal, but a lived reality for all citizens” among other political promises. The campaign, however, has not started in the best way: the official email did not work either, according to the LA Times. So far he has spent almost $120,000 according to official documents, including $1500 on hairdressing. and another $36,500 in a film production company.

Historically, the independent candidate has never posed a real threat to ending bipartisanship in the United States. Only on eight occasions since 1848 has a non-Republican or Democratic candidate managed to exceed 10% of the votes, a list that includes Theodore Roosevelt as the greatest reference, with 27.4%. The last one was in 1992. Another of the independent candidates for 2024 is Robert Francis Kennedy Jr, a well-known anti-vaccine activist who regularly shares messages against public health and false information on social networks. Buss competes against them.

In the Lakers he is remembered, above all, for the failed coup in 2017. Johnny and his brother Jim tried to get Jeanie Buss to stop being president and controlling owner of the franchise. Following Jim’s departure as vice president, the two attempted to elect a new board of governors on the team without Jeanie. They had to go to court, but without any basis, the two brothers ended up unable to gain control and remove Jeanie from the map. Since the passing of Jerry Buss, The Lakers have only managed to win one ring, in 2020, and it was the first where a woman was the main executive and owner of a franchise in any of the major leagues.
