As the sports club announced on Monday, “an extension of the cooperation has been agreed.” However, as usual, the Freiburg team did not announce a new contract term with Eggestein.

“A lot of what we promised when signing Maxi has come to fruition. He’s an excellent fit for SC both in terms of sport and personality and has made a significant contribution to the good development in recent years,” commented sports director Klemens Hartenbach in a Breisgauer press release . “Maxi is one of the heads of our team, so we are very happy about the contract extension.”

Eggestein moved from Werder Bremen to SC in the summer of 2021. Since then, the 27-year-old has played 116 games under coach Christian Streich, who retired at the end of the season. He scored six goals and set up eight goals. He is also an integral part of the starting lineup this season. He was forced to miss the last matchday due to a yellow card suspension.

“I’m in the right place at the sports club”

“I’ve been here for almost three years now and it actually feels longer – that shows that I’m in the right place here at the sports club,” Eggestein is quoted as saying by the club. “With the cup final and the experiences in Europe, my expectations were even exceeded. We are on a very good path and I am looking forward to the rest of my time in Freiburg.”

However, there will be a turning point in Freiburg this summer. After Streich leaves, Julian Schuster will take over as head coach.
