Max Finkgräfe: A Key Player at 1. FC Köln with Long-Term Contract

Max Finkgräfe is an integral part of Timo Schultz’s starting eleven. His contract with 1. FC Köln was extended long-term last autumn – and is valid regardless of the league.

Within just a few weeks, Max Finkgräfe has become an indispensable regular at 1. FC Köln. So important that the DFB recently decided against nominating the 19-year-old so that the left-back could commit to the decisive weeks in the relegation battle with Cologne.

Although Finkgräfe had to leave the training camp in Spain that was scheduled during the international break, the back injury that caused it seems to have been cured: Finkgräfe is currently training individually and there is hope of playing in view of the away game in Augsburg (Sunday, 3.30 p.m.).

Contract until 2026 – independent of the league

While FC’s stay in the Bundesliga remains in doubt, that of the Mönchengladbach native in Cologne has become more likely due to his rapid rise to the Bundesliga team. Reports from Geissblog and des Cologne City-Anzeiger, according to which Finkgräfe’s contract has been extended by another year, regardless of the league, until 2026, coincides with kicker information. Contrary to what the online media reported, this already happened with his third Bundesliga appearance, following the 2-0 defeat against VfB Stuttgart.

Finkgräfe has now made 14 further appearances, and Finkgräfe has always been in coach Timo Schultz’s starting line-up since matchday 17. However, this has not yet had any financial impact as the salary was not adjusted when the contract was automatically extended. However, given Finkgräfe’s steep rise, 1. FC Köln would be well advised to adjust the salary to extend the term.
