Matthias Casse Sets Sights on Olympic Glory after Epic Win and Strategic Tournament Plan

Winner of an epic final, with a golden score of 10 minutes 32 seconds, against the Austrian Shamil Borchashvili (IJF 9), the 27-year-old from Antwerp confided immediately that he would only play two more tournaments before its meeting of the year, July 30, at the Arena Champ de Mars, in Paris. These will be the European Championship in Zagreb at the end of April and the World Championships in Abu Dhabi at the end of May.

“I have done enough competitions and I have points galore,” he explained. “So I no longer have to worry about qualification or the world ranking. I can concentrate fully on the Olympic Games and make sure I arrive as fresh as possible in Paris. There will still be a championship ‘Europe and a world championship, in which I would like to participate. It will not be the aim of presenting myself there in the form of my life, but it will certainly be a springboard towards the Games. And that is always good to take.”

Until then, Matthias Casse will continue to refine his judo during two international training courses. The first will take place in the Czech Republic or Japan. And the second in Türkiye.

“I remember that in 2021, the world championship was not a major objective either, but that did not prevent me from becoming world champion. It is clearly possible. But here, I am especially delighted to enjoy a little rest before tackling what’s next,” he concluded.
