Matthias Casse Secures Sixth Grand Slam Victory, Sets Sights on Olympic Gold

“It’s once again great to find yourself on the top step of the podium,” he confided at the end of his day. “Winning the first two Grand Slams, especially in an Olympic year, gives a good feeling and offers great prospects. I also managed to defeat the Olympic champion from Rio today (Russian Khasan Khalmurzaevà, editor’s note) and the Tokyo Olympic champion (Japanese Takanori Nagase, editor’s note). This is the first time that I have beaten Nagase in three confrontations. It is undoubtedly positive. Overall, it was another trying day. I do not I wasn’t in the best shape, but these things happen. In this case, you still have to try to get as much as possible. And it was just enough to win gold. It’s also positive to know that I can beat big names and win when I’m not at the top.”

This is Matthias Casse’s sixth victory in a Grand Slam tournament and his second of the year, after his success in Paris at the beginning of February. The Mortsel native’s track record includes another victory in Paris, in 2020, and successes in Abu Dhabi (2021), Tel Aviv (2022) and Antalya (2023).

“The rest will be a period with a lot of training courses and not so many competitions,” he continued. “The goal now is to have my peak at the Olympic Games.”
