ATP Miami: Berrettini loses to Murray after a bout of weakness
Matteo Berrettini almost fainted during his first-round match against Andy Murray at the Miami Open. After leading the set, the Italian ultimately lost in three sets.
It’s been a good six months since Matteo Berrettini played his last competitive match on the ATP tour. The former world number 6 had to forfeit last year’s US Open after an ankle injury.
The Italian made his comeback at the Challenger tournament in Arizona in mid-March. “I’m so happy, it’s been ten years,” joked the 27-year-old, who was then stopped by Nuno Borges in the final.
At the $8.77 million 1000 Masters in Miami, the Roman met veteran Andy Murray with a cracking forehand in the starting round. After a successful starting set, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist suffered what he saw as a weak attack in the second round when the score was 2:5 and had to be treated by the tournament doctor.
Berrettini was able to continue, but in the end after 2:48 hours of play he had to admit defeat to the Scot 6:4, 3:6 and 4:6. Not only Berrettini, who is currently in 142nd place, had difficulty with the conditions in Florida (over 30 degrees and humidity of around 70 percent).
There was already a worrying incident during qualifying for the ATP tournament in Miami when 21-year-old Arthur Cazaux collapsed on the field and had to be transported away in a wheelchair.
