Mats Hummels Opens Up About Being Left Out of DFB Squad After BVB Victory

BVB wins the last game before the international break against Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1. Of all people, Mats Hummels (35) took the late lead.

The central defender was not nominated for the DFB squad.

In the DAZN interview with presenter Laura Wontorra and expert Fredi Bobic, Hummels speaks for the first time about not being nominated.

He explains: “I honestly expected it. It was my first Bundesliga game since mid-December. The others are too good for you to nominate someone who doesn’t play.”

Hummels reveals: “That’s why I had already planned the weeks with my son. That didn’t come as a surprise to me.”

But he hasn’t given up on his European Championship dream yet. “I just do what I can do. And then we’ll see. It’s completely understandable that the guys who deliver top performances are there,” said Hummels.

National coach Julian Nagelsmann also did without Nico Schlotterbeck, Julian Brandt, Niklas Süle, Karim Adeyemi and Emre Can in his squad.

Can was voted National Player of the Year by the fans for 2023, but now he is missing. “The coach has to decide that. I had a good conversation with Julian. He said that the door was still open,” he said when asked.
