Matías Moyano: From Late Bloomer to Tennis Coach Leader

Unlike other tennis players, Matías Moyano did not start playing in childhood. He encouraged himself a little later, at 13, without imagining the deep passion it would provoke in him and how far he would go, although not exactly being the protagonist. Accompanied by his brother, he set up complex training sessions and when he felt confident – both physically and mentally – he took his first steps at a competitive level, and participated in several tournaments until he made the leap.

In dialogue with TN, he gave details of the hard path he went through and the surprises that the profession gave him until he reached this dream present. “Succeeding is not easy due to the number of players there are, both in Argentina and abroad. The life of the tennis player is very sacrificed, in every sense. You wake up early, do the first training sessions, then rest and repeat in the afternoon. At the same time, sessions are added with psychologists, nutritionists, kinesiologists… He travels a lot and spends time away from family and friends. You have to be very prepared to face it,” he commented.

Matías – who is a level 1 and 2 national coach of the Argentine Tennis Association and level 2 professional coach of the International Tennis Federation – became nostalgic when he remembered that he did not have the necessary resources to play, which became a great obstacle. However, he never gave up: “Everything costs twice as much, but in the end the positive thing is that in addition to visiting various parts of the world, tennis led me to meet people who helped me acquire knowledge to launch myself as a coach.”

The goodbye to the fields, the first steps as a coach and the work with his sister Luciana, an Argentine reference

Moyano – whose exploits were also having been coach and captain of the Argentine U-16 Women’s Team and June Argentine national coach at Wimbledon 2023 – confided to this medium that since he was a child he was preparing to be a teacher, and today he is happy with that job.

“I started teaching classes in my free time at a small club that my family has in the town of Juárez Celman, in the province of Córdoba. And I took my first national coaching course. Then, when I stopped playing tennis, I dedicated myself full time to coaching kids of all ages and became a personal coach for my brother Agustín, who was a professional player. It was much later when I started with Sister Luciana Moyano. She was 7 years old and I accompanied her in every stage of preparation,” she indicated.

With Luciana she achieved extraordinary achievements: the young woman was a double gold medalist at the Junior Pan American Games in Cali 2021 and a Triple Gold Medalist at the South American Games in Rosario 2022. As if that were not enough, she was also number 10 in the international Junior ranking during that year , where he participated in all the Grand Slam tournaments. All of this was the fruit of the great task that she did with Matías, who feels a deep admiration for her.

Luciana Moyano was one of the youngest players in the world to win an international junior tournament, at just 13 years old. She, along with her brother Matías, also won the South American under 16 team championship in 2021, where they represented Argentina. Thanks to that, they qualified for the World Cup in Turkey, which was held that same year. For the man from Córdoba, it was very exciting to see every step of her family member, in whom she reflects every time she sees her on a court.

Matías’ professional dreams and desires did not end there. Over time he was encouraged to found his own academy, called MtennisTeam, where the best players in Córdoba are trained. His recognition and word of mouth also helped him continue to establish himself, although this time abroad. He settled in Miami with his wife and was summoned to direct the Polonsky Academy, where he excels today.

“The owner is an Argentine who has lived here for a long time. He offered me a job there and now I am in charge of the highly competitive area. I am very dedicated to age training. The truth is that I am happy, because the possibilities in the United States are endless,” she said with joy before this medium.

Matías Moyano is also a graphic designer, although he dedicated little time to that profession, which forced him to attend university for several years. Today he can say that he lives and supports himself exclusively with tennis, his great love, the one he met as a teenager and stole his heart.
