Match-Fixing Scandal: Federal Prosecutor Demands Penalties for Westerlo and Genk Coaches and Players

The final phase of the competition match between Westerlo and Genk can still have a tail end for both clubs. Because the match was “frozen” by both teams, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office demands a suspension for coaches Wouter Vrancken and Rik De Mil. The players risk having to pay a fine.

The last 5 minutes of the regular season have been much discussed. Genk, which was certain of the Champions’ Play-offs, and Westerlo, which was certain of retention, calmly passed the ball around at 1-1. A salon draw.

The Westerlo board could do anything but laugh at the sham and fired coach Rik De Mil. But it doesn’t stop there, because the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office is now also demanding penalties.

The 22 players who were in the slot on the field are in danger of having to pay a fine of 1,000 euros. “The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office holds all players partly responsible for the lack of sportsmanship,” it said.

Double the amount is demanded from Nicolas Madsen (Westerlo) and Joris Kayembe (Genk), because they set up a one-two in front of the penalty area. A suspension of two match days is also demanded for them.

The coaches are not spared either. The national public prosecutor’s office wants to suspend Wouter Vrancken and Rik De Mil for three matches, two of which will be effective.

It is no coincidence that the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office demands the strictest punishments for coaches. “The only people who could have stopped this non-sporting spectacle because they could influence the players were the trainers, which (consciously) did not happen,” it said.

The last 5 minutes of Westerlo-Genk were a mockery of fair play.

“The last 5 minutes of Westerlo-Genk were a mockery of fair play,” the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office explains. “This is not only against the rules of the game, it is also manifestly unfair compared to other teams that were still in the running for a Champions’ Play-off ticket.”

“The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office classifies this as blatant cheating. It goes without saying that this shabby display has not benefited the image of Belgian football.”

Genk and Westerlo also threaten to have to pay a fine of 10,000 euros.

The Disciplinary Committee for Professional Football must now rule on the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office’s claim.
