Martínez’s double bet: “We aim for the Cup and the League”

“I had to play in all categories of Argentine soccer and I think that speaks well of me. Because I knew how to go through all the adversities. Therefore, playing the Copa Libertadores with Talleres, after so many sacrifices and continuing to insist, is a reward. And I want to enjoy playing the Libertadores, because it is not something normal. And I have to do it in a team that is growing and we want to leave a very good image.”

The one who speaks is Alejandro Martínezthe forward who arrived in Talleres in February and in a handful of games, with a great goal included in the classic against Belgrano, has already shown signs that he is a player who can bring a lot of joy to the Albiazule fans.

‘Papu’ Martínez, as he has been called since he was a kid in his native González Catán (Buenos Aires), is 26 years old, he played for Atlas, Barracas Central, Riestra, Argentino de Merlo, Defensores de Belgrano, Central Córdoba de Santiago del Estero and Tijuana de México, the last club before reaching the Jardín neighborhood. In Xolos, in the Mexican first division, the forward played 32 games and scored three goals.
With that trajectory behind him, he knows what sacrifice is all about and that is why he is happy with the present he has to go through. In dialogue with PERFIL CÓRDOBA he affirms: “I arrived at Talleres at a good moment in my careergrowing and returning from abroad, where I matured a lot both personally and as a footballer.”

With that momentum, enjoy this present in the ‘T’, which is in the vanguard positions of Zone A of the League Cup and now they are preparing to debut in Group B of the Copa Libertadores de América. “I am very happy and happy to be in Talleres, I found a great team, where they work seriously. The team is growing and we are going from smallest to largest in the face of everything that is coming,” he highlights.

—What does it mean to debut in the Copa Libertadores against San Pablo, which seems to be the great rival in the area?
—Everyone knows what San Pablo is, what it can do because of the magnitude of the team it has. But Talleres already knows what it’s like to face them in the Cup. We take it seriously and we know we can play a great game.

—Did they talk on campus about the group they were assigned to?
—Yes, we had a group talk and they talked about the group and the Cup, about continuing on the same path. We had a very nice group and we have to enjoy it.

—What are you aiming for in the Copa Libertadores?
—The objective is clear to everyone: we want to go as far as possible. It will be seen later. We will go step by step, because we are also very focused on the League Cup, where we want to qualify among the top four.

—Did you talk to Walter Ribonetto about your role in the team, where you rotate a lot? What is your relationship with him?
—My relationship with ‘Tino’ is excellent. He is a great coach, he is always present, he gives you many variations and instructions. He knows that he can use me as an outsider or as an insider. That’s why I’m calm, because I enjoy when I play or when I go to the bank. My idea is to help the team.

—Did you quickly win the fans’ hearts with the goal against Belgrano?
—Since I arrived at Talleres, everything happened very quickly. I arrived and I just entered when the second half started against Instituto, where I created the chance to score a goal and people started to look at me. Afterwards, I scored the goal against Belgrano, which is no small feat. A lot of things happened to me in a few games and I am very grateful.

—Did any Talleres colleague surprise you?
—Yes, (Rubén) Botta surprises us all. Is special. The kind of playing, his magnitude as a player. He surprises me every day what he does, how he trains. I am fortunate to have him and Ramón (Sosa) as teammates.

LEARN FROM DIEGO
Alejandro ‘Papu’ Martínez played for Deportivo Riestra for just over two years, when the team was in the Primera B Metropolitana. During a training session, back in January 2017, he appeared Diego Armando Maradona with training attire and gave everyone a class on how to take free throws. “They are moments that remain in your memory and in your life. I had seen it several times, but that day was special. He arrived dressed as a soccer player and started teaching us how to kick, giving us talks. It is a moment that remains with me for a lifetime,” recalled the Talleres footballer. Martínez assures that he listened to Maradona’s advice. So much so that he later scored some free kick goals by releasing his foot, just as the ‘Ten’ taught him.
