Markéta Vondroušová Struggles to Find Form in New Tennis Season, Eyes Redemption at Indian Wells

Markéta Vondroušová is looking for form in the new season in vain. The seventh player in the world has only a fifty percent record in the current year, she has lost four of the eight matches she has played. The Czech tennis player will now try to return to last year’s comfort at the big tournament in Indian Wells, but the American experts do not believe her.

The 24-year-old Wimbledon champion has a hard time coping with the minimal rest between seasons and the related poor preparation.

She already complained before Christmas in an interview for Aktuálně.cz about the announcement of the Golden Canary survey.

“The break was very short. I immediately started moving again and it almost feels as if I didn’t even have one. I immediately jumped back on the train that I know,” she declared, noting that she “doesn’t give up on the demanding program set by the WTA do in”.

The new season confirmed her fears.

At the Australian Open, she was eliminated in the first round and put on the crown with lackluster performances less than two weeks ago in Dubai, where she already led Sorana Cirstea 6:2, 5:1 in the quarterfinals.

But she burned six match points and enabled the Romanian, who, according to her, was already planning to fly home in her head, to turn her life around.

That is why it is not surprising that the Vondroušovás are not trusted in the world of tennis at the moment.

For example, an extensive preview of mostly American experts of the specialized magazine Tennis.com can serve as proof.

Two of the nine experts named the Czech tennis player as the main candidate for early elimination, namely Ed McGrogan and Matt Fitzgerald.

At the same time, she never once appeared among the names that could shine or surprise in Indian Wells.

Only one tennis player was written off a little more: Uns Džábirová. Five tennis journalists immediately pointed to the Tunisian.

The world number six, whom Vondroušová beat in the final of last year’s Wimbledon, is experiencing an even more serious crisis, having won only two matches this year.

Both seeded players will have free passage to the second round at the so-called “fifth Grand Slam” in Indian Wells.

In the past few weeks, Vondroušová admitted that this means significant help for her.

“The free rounds at such big tournaments as Miami or Indian Wells will also do a lot. You win one round and you’re already playing for the round of 16. And I need the points before the summer defense comes. I already know that it will be very difficult.” Vondroušová is aware of the impending extreme pressure on results.

In California, she is defending last year’s round of 16, having reached the same goal two years ago in the impressive area in the middle of the Mojave Desert. But her maximum is the quarter-finals from 2019.

He will also defend the round of 16 in Miami, Rome or Montreal. Quarter-finals in Berlin, Cincinnati and at the US Open and the biggest portion of points, of course, for his shocking title at Wimbledon.
