Lyon’s Comeback Against Toulouse: A Thrilling Ligue 1 Showdown

Toulouse FC 2-3 Olympique Lyonnais

Goals: Dallinga (53rd) and Sierro (58th, SP) for the Violets // Lacazette (33rd), Cherki (77th) and O’Brien (81st) for the Gones

Toulouse and Lyon had the opportunity to definitively get out of the race to remain, this Friday at the Stadium at the opening of the 26th day of Ligue 1. In this little game, it was OL who knew how to distinguish themselves in a match which became lively after returning from the locker room. Overall, the Lyonnais dominated the start and then the end of the match, allowing Téfécé to regain the advantage in the meantime. But it was the Gones who knew how to make the difference and definitively say goodbye to the fear of the descent. On the other hand, the Violets remain four points behind Nantes, a barrage and do not yet have complete peace of mind.

Ping-pong in the second half

Even if Toulouse showed up in the 10th minute, this first period turned to OL’s advantage. Very compact in defense, fairer in the middle thanks to Maxence Caqueret, and sharper in the last meters, the Lyonnais dominated the first 45 minutes of which we will note a fairly low intensity. It was logically Les Gones who opened the scoring shortly after the half-hour mark. Thanks to whom? Alexandre Lacazette, obviously. Caqueret shifts Corentin Tolisso to his right, and sees the 2018 world champion smash Guillaume Restes’ post. The loving leather Lacazette, who receives the ball on the trunk before sending a beautiful half-volley into the purple nets (0-1, 33e).

But Toulouse returned in the second half with other intentions. The locals grab visitors by the throat and don’t let them breathe. And unsurprisingly, it pays off. Yann Gboho finally finds a flaw in the Lyon defense by sending a superb ladle towards Warren Kamanzi, who takes advantage of Clinton Mata’s poor alignment to present himself against Anthony Lopes. Intelligently, he offers the equalizer to Thijs Dallinga who just has to push the ball into the empty goal (1-1, 53e). But Téfécé does not stop there and continues to engulf OL. The Occitans took advantage of an attacking foul by Ernest Nuamah on Gboho to recover a penalty. Vincent Sierro takes care of it and transforms by crossing his right shot (2-1, 58e).

The Gones finally regained some control in the 70th minute and were rewarded with Rayan Cherki’s first goal in Ligue 1 this season. Served in the area by Mama Baldé, the young Lyonnais sends a low strike between the legs of Restes (2-2, 77e). Perhaps stung by his non-selection in Espoirs, Cherki is twirling. After a new series of swaying dribbles, he kicks a perfect corner which Jake O’Brien can take, whose helmet shot allows OL to get back in front and take three vital points (2-3, 81e). Here they are now 10th in Ligue 1 and four points behind 11th, Toulouse.
