Luxembourg thought they had equalized against Georgia this Thursday in the semi-finals of the Euro 2024 play-offs. But after viewing the images, the match referee canceled the goal and excluded a Red Lions player.

A real emotional elevator. This Thursday, during the Euro 2024 play-off semi-final match against Georgia (2-0), Luxembourg exulted…before being completely cooled down. Shortly after returning from the locker room, while trailing, the Red Lions shook the Georgian net through Gerson Rodrigues (53rd). Luc Holtz’s men thought they had equalized. Except that the central referee of the match, Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez, was called by the VAR to view previous images. Indeed, a little before the Luxembourg action, the Georgian Georges Mikautadze, launched towards the cages of Anthony Moris, was stopped by Maxime Chanot. And after viewing the images, the Spanish official considered that the intervention of the AC Ajaccio player, who was then in the position of last defender, was unlawful. He thus sanctioned him with a red card, synonymous with exclusion.

A real blow to the head which destroyed their hopes of returning to the game. And what was supposed to happen, happened. A few minutes later, Georgia scored the break goal thanks to their center forward Budu Zivzivadze (64th), already author of the opener. With this victory, Willy Sagnol’s players are qualified for the Euro 2024 play-off final. They will face Greece. Luxembourg, for its part, will not participate in the continental competition in Germany.
