Future hope Lulu Sun is turning her back on Swiss Tennis. In New Zealand she becomes the clear number 1 in the country.
Lulu Sun reached the second round as a qualifier at the WTA tournament in Auckland in January, attracting interest from the New Zealand Tennis Association. The 22-year-old daughter of a Croatian and a Chinese woman was born in Te Anau on New Zealand’s South Island and has a Swiss and a New Zealand passport.
The world number 151 explained her decision on the Tennis New Zealand website. «Growing up in Switzerland, I carry love for both countries in my heart. For me, representing New Zealand is more than just a professional decision, it is a recognition of my roots.”

Chance of participating in the Olympics
Practical considerations are also likely to contribute to the change of nation. In New Zealand, Sun is the clear number 1 and can hope for a place at the Olympics through a continental quota place. As the third best Swiss woman, this would be unrealistic for Paris this summer. It can be assumed that she will soon also play on the WTA Tour under the New Zealand flag.
