Lima, Peru to Host 2027 Pan American Games: A Look Back at Venezuela’s History in the Games

CARACAS. – The city of Lima, capital of Peru, is currently designated as the headquarters of the “Pan American Games” and “Parapan American Games” of 2027, the news is currently under the “Pan American Sports Organization”, also known as Panam Sports.

With 28 votes in favor out of a possible 40, the Peruvian capital received the honor of hosting these games for the second time in its history. The previous one dates back to 2019. The designation of the Inca city comes two months after the declination of Barranquilla, which was supposed to host the Juegos Panamericanos but withdrew at the beginning of the year. Lima was in the running with Asunción to host the 2027 games.

The designation of Lima came during the General Assembly Extraordinaria of Panam Sports and where the 40 member countries participated.

A bit of history

Venezuela has participated in all editions of the Juegos Panamericanos organized to date. The first presence dates back to Buenos Aires 1951.

The best performance was in 1983, when the games were held in Caracas and where he finished in fifth place with 73 medals: 12 gold, 26 silver and 35 bronze.

In 2003, in Santo Domingo, Venezuela won more gold medals and finished in sixth place with 64 medals: 16 gold, 21 silver and 37 bronze. On that occasion the Creole expedition won gold in men’s volleyball, it was the second occasion in which Venezuela made the “Gloria al bravo pueblo” resound thanks to a team sport. The precedent dates back to 1959, when baseball brought home the most precious metal in Chicago.
