Leylah Annie Fernandez Advances to Third Round of Miami Tournament with Victory Over Arango

Quebecer Leylah Annie Fernandez started the Miami tournament on a high note, where she took advantage of a bye in the first round, defeating Colombian Emiliana Arango in two sets of 6-4 and 6-2 on Saturday to advance to the third round.

Coming from qualifying, Arango had no answers to the game of Fernandez, 31st seed. The Canadian, who now lives in Miami, led 5-0 in the first set, before dropping four games in a row to close the first act.

After this decline, where she committed two double faults, Fernandez pulled herself together, easily winning the following games. She pocketed the victory after 1 hour and 18 minutes of play. She obtained six breaks of serve on as many occasions against Arango, including one to win the match.

In the round of 16, Fernandez will face the American Jessica Pegula, known to Montrealers for having triumphed at the National Bank Open last summer. She took advantage of the abandonment of the Chinese Lin Zhu in the second round of their duel, which she led 6-4 and 4-1.

More details will follow.
