Leicester Women’s manager Willie Kirk was sacked by the club following an internal investigation after allegations he had had an affair with one of his team’s players

Leicester have sacked their women’s coach, Willie Kirk, after an internal investigation into an alleged affair with one of their players. The manager had already been suspended on 8 March, after the 2-0 victory against Liverpool. A success that earned the Foxes qualification for the FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham which will be played on 14 April.

Kirk had since been replaced by assistant Jennifer Foster and coach Stephen Kirby – the pair losing two out of two games in charge of the women’s team. The first against Spurs (1-0) and the second against Brighton (3-2).

This season is the second time that a manager of a women’s team has been investigated and then fired. In fact, Sheffield United sacked Jonathan Morgan in February because when he was coaching the Leicester women’s team (he too) allegedly started a clandestine relationship with a player who was a minor in his team at the time. The family of the girl, who is now over 20 but at the time she was 17, had accused the coach of inappropriate and immoral behaviour. For her part, Morgan had insisted on the fact that the girl was already an adult, although she later said she was aware of having crossed the line given the detached relationship that a coach should maintain with the players in his squad. The fact is that Kirk’s is the second case in the space of a few weeks. A story that brings back the topic of relationships between coaches and players which were recently defined as inappropriate and dangerous by Sarina Wiegman, coach of the English women’s national football team.
