Lanzarote crowns 49er and 49er FX world champions in historic competition

The competition, which took place in the bay of Playa Blanca, ended yesterday, marking a milestone in the Olympic sailing calendar. During the intense days of racing, competitors faced variable conditions that tested their skill, strategy and endurance. The competition has been fierce, with more than 120 boats from 36 countries fighting for the title in the men’s and women’s categories. The Lanzarote International Regatta thus bids farewell to the 2024 edition, in which four Olympic class world championships have been held, a historic event for the island.

The winners of this edition have proven to be the best in their class, with outstanding performances that have earned them worldwide recognition. In the 49er category, the French crew composed of Erwan Fischer and Clément Pequin won gold, followed by Bart Lambriex and Floris van de Werken who took silver. The Spaniards, Botín and Trittel, have kept revalidating their title as third, achieving bronze.

In the FX category, there has been a change on the podium compared to the last World Cup (Hague 2023): the Dutch Odile van Aanholt and Annette Duetz are the new 49erFX world champions, and the Swedish Vilma Bobeck and Rebecca Netzler have obtained the silver, third place was finally achieved by Jana Germani and Giorgia Bertuzzi.

The awards ceremony, held on the terrace of the Oasis restaurant (Marina Rubicón), was attended by institutions, organization and crews. Rafael Lasso, CEO of Marina Rubicón, opened the event by thanking the competitors, organizers and volunteers for their dedication and effort, pointing out that “this World Cup has been a demonstration of the passion, talent and dedication for sailing that, especially “We have in the Canary Islands.
