Kyrie Irving Praises French Defender Victor Wembanyama as Defensive Standout

All-Star point guard and former NBA champion from Dallas, Kyrie Irving, was full of praise for the defensive qualities of Frenchman Victor Wembanyama.

Clumsy in attack during the San Antonio Spurs’ defeat against the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday evening (107-113), Victor Wembanyama nevertheless impressed Kyrie Irving with his defensive qualities. The leader had already stood out earlier in the season against the French inside, with an extremely difficult double-step to get around his long arms. On Tuesday, Irving complimented Wembanyama on his impact on defense.

“He has this immense wingspan so he covers a lot of ground”analyzed Irving, 31 years old and NBA champion in 2016 with the Cleveland Cavaliers. “As a competitor, I like to go in there and challenge him, because if you can finish against him, you can finish against anyone in the world.”, added the eight-time All-Star. Before making him the favorite for the title of defender of the year.

The animal “almost way above” competition

“I don’t know how he could not be. He’s as good as any player to win the award in recent years. He is almost well above and there are still around fifteen matches left., supported Irving, author of 28 points on 13/21 shots against the Spurs. Wembanyama, 20, is the big favorite for the rookie of the year title, rewarding the best rookie in the NBA.

The Frenchman from Spurs, however, has little chance of being voted defender of the year, which has never happened to a rookie in the history of the NBA. And this despite being by far the player with the most counterattacks this season (3.5 per match). His compatriot Rudy Gobert (Minnesota Timberwolves), already rewarded three times (2018, 2019, 2021), is one of the favorites.
