Kurt W. Steiner: A Tribute to a Sports Legend in Carinthia

The Carinthian sports family mourns the loss of Kurt W. Steiner, who worked as an official at the Austrian General Sports Association (ASVÖ) and the Carinthian regional association for around 40 years. He died at the age of 80.

As the ASVÖ Carinthia describes on its homepage, Kurt Steiner (born on June 7, 1944), who was interested in sports, found organized sport early on. As an all-round athlete in ice hockey, rowing, gliding, judo, sailing, diving and tennis, he was active in the Carinthian ASVÖ clubs right from the start and thus his future official work for the association was marked out early on.

“From 1981 he held various positions in the ASVÖ Carinthia as state specialist, auditor, financial officer, secretary and vice president until he was elected president by the general assembly in 2007 and was unanimously confirmed in his position for a further four years in 2011 and 2015,” explains the ASVÖ .

Kurt Steiner, who worked in the Carinthian printing company from his apprenticeship until retirement, represented the interests of the Carinthian member clubs and Carinthian sports for over twelve years in the federal committees of the ASVÖ, in the Austrian Federal Sports Organization and other sports-related institutions. From 2009 to 2017 he was seconded to ENGSO, the European association of non-governmental sports organizations, for Austria.

Great Golden Medal of Honor

In 2019, Steiner received the Great Golden Medal of Honor from the state of Carinthia. State Governor Peter Kaiser and State Sports Director Arno Arthofer acknowledged his many contributions to sport in a broadcast on Tuesday and expressed their condolences to his relatives. “Kurt Steiner has done an incredible amount for sport in Carinthia. He has always carried out his voluntary work with a high level of professionalism, hard work and appreciation. “Kurt Steiner put his heart and soul into the sport, the clubs, the athletes and was a reliable partner,” said Kaiser and Arthofer in unison. “Kurt Steiner was always concerned with supporting clubs and athletes of all sports equally,” says Arthofer. As president, he also pushed ASVÖ Carinthia’s participation in health, school and popular sports projects.
