Korea’s Ahn Se-young Shines at All England Open: Eyes Second Consecutive Title

Korea’s badminton star Ahn Se-young (22, Samsung Life Insurance) continued her strong march toward her second consecutive victory in the All England Open, the most prestigious international competition.

Ahn Se-young, ranked No. 1 in the women’s singles world rankings, showed a stable performance against India’s Pusala Sindhu (No. 11) in the round of 16 of the tournament held in Birmingham, England on the 15th and won 2-0 (21-19 21-11).

Ahn Se-young, who won the women’s singles gold medal at this tournament last year for the first time in 27 years as a Korean player since Bang Bang-hyun in 1996, is determined to build on the momentum of last week’s French Open victory and achieve her second consecutive All England Open title.

The All England Open started in 1899 and is the oldest and most prestigious tournament in the world. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has also designated this competition as the highest level World Tour Super 1000 competition.

In the women’s doubles, the pair of Kim So-young (Incheon International Airport) and Kong Hee-yong (Jeonbuk Bank) and Lee So-hee (Incheon International Airport) and Baek Hana (MG Saemaeul Geumgo) defeated teams from Canada and Japan, respectively, and advanced to the quarterfinals. The two teams faced each other in the finals of this competition last year, with Kim So-young and Gong Hee-yong winning the gold medal, and Lee So-hee and Baek Ha-na winning the silver medal. In this tournament, the two teams from the bracket will meet in the semifinals.

The mixed doubles team of Kim Won-ho (Samsung Life Insurance) and Jeong Na-eun (Hwasun County Office) also advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Singapore’s Hi Yong Kai Terry and Tan Wei Han Jessica 2-0 (21-14 21-15).

On the other hand, Kim Ga-eun, who competed in the women’s singles with Ahn Se-young, was unable to overcome the barrier of world No. 3 Tai Tzu-ying (Taiwan) and lost 0-2 (17-21 15-21), stopping her challenge in the round of 16.
