Konstantin Koltsov, former hockey champion and boyfriend of Aryna Sabalenka (n.2 in the tennis world) dies

Konstantin Koltsov, boyfriend of tennis champion Aryna Sabalenka (world number 2) and former Belarusian ice hockey player, has died at the age of 42. The Belarusian hockey federation announced this in a short statement, specifying that his death occurred “suddenly”, without specifying how or where he died. “We are in mourning,” the federation wrote on its website. During his career Koltsov also played with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL.

Koltsov began playing for Junactva Minsk in the Belarusian First Division during the 1997–98 season, and moved to Russia’s Severstal Cherepovets for the following season. Due to his incredible speed and maneuverability, he was often called “Russian Rocket II” due to his similar playing style to that of Russian great Pavel Bure. Internationally, Koltsov played on the Belarusian national team at the Winter Olympics and IIHF World Championships. Koltsov had three children with his wife Julia.

The two divorced in 2020. He began publicly dating Belarusian tennis player Aryna Sabalenka in June 2021.

Who is Aryna Sabalenka

Nicknamed the Belarusian Tiger due to her fiery temperament and aggressive playing style, Aryna Sabalenka has won fourteen WTA singles titles in her career, including two consecutive Grand Slams at the 2023 and 2024 Australian Open. An excellent doubles player , he has accumulated two other Majors in this specialty: the 2019 US Open and the 2021 Australian Open, both won with Elise Mertens. Together with the Belgian tennis player, she also won the WTA 1000 in Indian Wells and Miami in 2019, thus achieving the Sunshine Double.

In both singles and doubles she rose to the top of the world rankings, a goal achieved in September 2023 and February 2021 respectively, thus becoming the eighth tennis player in history to have excelled in both specialties and the first and only tennis player born in Belarus: before her, Viktoryja Azaranka in 2012 in singles and Nataša Zvereva in doubles in the nineties.
