Kiss scandal: Public prosecutor demands two and a half years in prison for Rubiales

In the case against the former Spanish association president Luis Rubiales, the public prosecutor’s office has demanded two and a half years in prison. It’s about the so-called kissing scandal at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Rubiales put pressure on soccer player Jennifer Hermoso to “justify and approve of the kiss that was given to her against her will,” it said indictment filed with the court.

The public prosecutor’s office is investigating Rubiales for sexual assault and coercion. Rubiales harassed Hermoso in August 2023 after the Spanish women’s national team won the World Cup. During the award ceremony, he held the player’s head with both hands and kissed her on the mouth.

This behavior caused intense international outrage. Rubiales then explained that the kiss was consensual. Hermoso rejected this and filed a complaint. After lengthy hesitations and protestations of innocence, Rubiales resigned as head of the association in September.
