Kane’s brace drags Bayern Munich into the quarter-finals

Lazio was eliminated in the round of 16 of the Champions League. The Biancocelesti were defeated by Bayern Munich 3-0 in the second leg of the round of 16, after the Romans won 1-0 in the first leg match played three weeks ago at the Olimpico in Rome. Kane’s brace and Mueller’s goal overturned the goal scored by Ciro Immobile in front of his own fans and so Maurizio Sarri’s boys say goodbye to the top continental competition, losing a very important direct clash to allow Italy to benefit from five places in the next edition of the Champions League.

Lazio had a great opportunity to take the lead and send the hosts into crisis. In the 37th minute, in fact, Zaccagni crossed into the middle perfectly from the left, the ball crossed the entire penalty area and appeared at the far post Immobile, who dived and hit the ball with his head, but sent it wide. Sigh of relief for the Germans who, on the reversal in front, managed to find the way to the net, in full compliance with the famous saying “wrong goal, goal conceded”: Guerreiro makes a mistake in the penalty area, the ball somehow arrives at the far post, Kane rushes ahead of Marusic and mocks Provedel.

The Biancocelesti stagger and try to return to the changing rooms with the minimum disadvantage, to play everything in the second half, but in full injury time de Ligt volleys following a corner kick, Mueller deflects his header right in front of Provedel and makes it 2-0 which would guarantee qualification for Bayern Munich. Lazio tries not to give up at the start of the second half, but never manages to attack to find that goal that would reopen the contest and in the 66th minute Kane scored twice to definitively close the score: Provedel blocks Sané’s insidious shot and on the rebound the English striker is the quickest of all, scores the 3-0 and brings the curtain down on the match.

Five minutes later Mueller hits the post on the counterattack, Lazio can’t really do anything and the match drags sadly towards its natural conclusion. PSG beat Real Sociedad 2-1 at home: a brace from Mbappè and a late goal from Merino, the French advance to the quarter-finals after a 2-0 victory in the first leg.
