A judo exchange camp was held on the 27th at the Kodokan in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, inviting elementary and junior high school students who lost their places to practice due to the Noto Peninsula earthquake in January. About 30 people from disaster-stricken areas such as Ishikawa Prefecture participated in the traditional judo training camp. I worked up a sweat in a dojo at the head temple.
The exchange camp will be held from the 26th to the 28th. The children will come to Tokyo with donations from people involved in judo from around the country, and will practice while staying at the Kodokan. There was also time for classroom lectures to learn about the history of judo, including the teachings of Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo.
Kairyu Shinde, a sixth-year elementary school student, said with a smile, “It’s fun to be able to practice judo with everyone in a big dojo.” His home in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, was completely destroyed by the tsunami, and he moved with his family to Kanazawa City. As his life changes, he said, “It gives me energy for the future.”
