Jorge Lorenzo Highlights Incident at Portuguese MotoGP: Marquez Not to Blame, Bagnaia Could Have Avoided Accident

Jakarta

MotoGP legend, Jorge Lorenzo, highlighted the accident incident involving Francesco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez at the Portuguese MotoGP, Sunday (25/3/2024). According to Jorge Lorenzo, Bagnaia could have avoided the accident. On the other hand, Lorenzo believes that no one can be punished for the incident that caused the two riders to leave the track.

“Marc is an aggressive rider, but at this moment (accident), I don’t think he can be blamed. Marc didn’t have a complete 360° view of what was happening. On the other hand, the party behind, in this case Bagnaia, “You can see the movement of Marquez who wants to return to the front lines,” said Lorenzo to SkySport, quoted on Tuesday (26/3/2024).

Lorenzo continued to explain that Bagnaia was the only person who could prevent the accident from happening, by letting Marquez pass him. But as if he didn’t want to give in, Bagnaia actually tried to overtake Marquez in a very narrow space.

“He (Bagnaia) actually tried (forced) into a narrow space, and opened the gas a little more than usual. They both had the same plan, namely to start first in that corner, and in the end they touched each other. In this case, in my opinion, “Marc was not at fault and Pecco could have avoided the collision,” explained Lorenzo.

No Riders Were Punished

Even though he seemed to be defending Marquez and cornering Bagnaia, according to Lorenzo, no rider could be punished for this incident. This is purely a racing incident where the percentage is 50:50.

“This action cannot be sanctioned, but if Pecco ‘Bagnaia’ had yielded when being overtaken by Marc, then this accident would never have happened and no one would have fallen,” said Lorenzo.
